British Gurkhas stage protest outside Labour Party’s conference venue

September 24th, 2008 · No Comments

Retired British Gurkha soldiers and their families staged demonstration outside the venue of Britain’s ruling Labour Party’s conference in Manchester on Tuesday — as part their pressure campaign for right to settle in Britain.

Carrying placards and banners emblazoned with slogans demanding rights to settle in Britain, over 50 ex-British Gurkha soldiers and their family members participated in the demonstration in front of Town Hall, the venue of the Labour conference.

Amid media glare, the ex-Gurkhas appeared at the protest programme in ‘Gurkha hat’ and their wives in gunyu choli, a typical Nepali attire.

The protest was jointly organised by Gurkha Army Ex-servicemen Organisation (GAESO) and United British Gurkha Ex-servicemen Association.

The Gurkhas had staged a similar protest at the venue of the Liberal Democratic Party’s conference in Bournemouth last week and are planning another protest during the conference of the Conservative Party in Birmingham on Sept 30.

The Gurkhas have been demanding a review on the British government’s decision to allow ex-servicemen retiring after 1997 to settle in the Britain. They have also moved the London High Court demanding judicial review on the decision, which they describe as discriminatory.

Around 200,000 Nepali Gurkhas fought for Britain in World Wars I and II, and about 3,500 currently serve in the British army. More than 45,000 have been killed serving Britain.
